About
Toktogul District is located in the northeastern part of the Jalal-Abad Region of Kyrgyzstan, within the historic Ketmen-Tyube Valley. The district holds vital socio-economic importance as the country's primary hydropower hub, hosting the Toktogul Reservoir and the Toktogul Hydroelectric Station cascade. The region's economy relies heavily on energy production, agriculture, beekeeping, fishery, mining, and eco-tourism.
History
The historical roots of the district run deep: the Ketmen-Tyube Valley was one of Central Asia's ancient cradles of civilization, rich with Saka-Scythian burial mounds. Administratively, Toktogul District was established in 1926. Initially named Ketmen-Tyube District, it was officially renamed in December 1940 in honor of the prominent Kyrgyz akyn (bard) Toktogul Satylganov. In 1998, the territories of the abolished Uch-Terek District were merged into it.
