About

Tash-Kumyr City is one of the most vital industrial and energy centers within the Jalal-Abad Region of Kyrgyzstan. It is situated on the right bank of the Naryn River along the strategic Bishkek–Osh highway. The defining feature of modern Tash-Kumyr is its crucial role in the country's hydropower sector, as the city's jurisdiction hosts two major regional hydroelectric facilities on the Naryn River: the Tash-Kumyr HES and the Shamaldy-Say HES.

History

The foundation and development of the city are inextricably linked with the discovery and industrial exploitation of rich coal deposits in the region during the 1930s. Initially established as a small miners' settlement, a dedicated railway line was soon constructed to boost and streamline coal transportation. Due to the rapid growth of the local mining economy, the settlement officially achieved regional city status on April 15, 1943.
